Using Audio Catechism CDs Can
Help Teach the Baltimore Catechism
Audio Catechism (CDs and Downloads) can reduce the effort necessary to memorize the Baltimore Catechism answers.
Copybooks help with the memorization and handwriting, as well! They offer multisensory help for busy Catholics!

As you begin, and continue, to use these CDs be sure to check that your student can pronounce each word well and then each phrase well before using this recording (to aid memory). They are meant to supplement, not replace, the teacher's and parent's efforts. They do this quite well, whether the instructor uses a direct instruction/outcomes based method, or whether the instructor simply wishes to use explicit instruction of the facts in a low pressure setting. These CDs aid memorization in either setting.
E-Catechism Copybooks are downloadable for immediate use for memorizing and for handwriting and spelling practice. The First Communion Catechism Copybook uses Manuscript. The Confirmation Catechism Copybook uses either Manuscript or beautiful Cursive. You choose. It can be nice to have both for further handwriting practice.
Expand these questions with catechism, Rosary and Bible picture books so that your children know and love the material they are studying. (See our

recommendations.) The CDs are meant to relieve some of the burden of drill and to help the student retain many questions for any cumulative review before reception of the sacrament. These tracks are numbered exactly according to the enclosed Catechism Questions list which makes it easier for even very young students to find the right audio catechism answer by track number. St. Anne's Helper hereby gives you permission to print as many copies of the audio and text (from the same CD!) as you want for your own home and vehicle, etc. The prayers will be at the end of the First Communion CD to make it easier for the child to search for a question track, yet the prayers should be learned before the questions and answers. Be sure to start memorizing the prayers early in the First Communion year or even the year before, which might lessen stress during the First Communion year. The Living My Religion series used three books to teach these questions, which means that it is usually good to start memorizing the prayers in Kindergarten. Be sure not to overload the student. Ambient learning is good enough for most of these answers. Use "repeat one", "program", and pause to better memorize the more important questions.
The Confirmation questions and answers are placed after the Catholic prayers on the Confirmation CD since older students are able to navigate past them easier than younger students. Generally, these CDs are not meant to be listened to straight through. This can be fine for an adult catechumen or for review, but it would not be appropriate for a young child. They consist only of a list meant to be learned three to five questions per week. Saints’ lives that are a joy to learn in the First Communion year are St. Tarcisius, Blessed Imelda, St. Pius X, St. Caecilia and St. John the Baptist. The Mysteries of the Rosary can be learned before the right liturgical season, for example: the Joyful Mysteries before Advent, the Sorrowful Mysteries before Lent, and the Glorious Mysteries before Easter. Tell the stories as you teach. Many books on these subjects are available from Tan Books, Neumann Press, and other publishers. These CDs can help with the drill; yet we hope you will be sure to use picture stories to help tell the life of Jesus like a family photo album. A nice help with the Catholic Ten Commandments is to teach each of the ten by itself with its number and also to have the student count with his fingers. In case he loses his place he can more easily recover. This is helpful with any of the answers that have numbered responses. The Ten Commandments Song has been used in some classes and tests were worded like it, so we have included the words to it on the First Communion Audio Catechism CD. It and the Apostle’s Creed Song can be found on the 24 Catholic Songs recording carried by Our Lady of Victory School in Post Falls, Idaho. It is helpful if the student knows his Ten Commandments and Catholic prayers in Kindergarten. Learning the “tells” (number 22...) early can also help the student discern the “forbids” easier later in the year. The "tells" and "forbids" answers are usually too much for little children to memorize well (and most of us adults!), yet they are very good for them to hear so as to consider them for their first Confession. Please include ad link. The “repeat one” and "program" features on CD players is a God-send for rehearsing a troublesome answer. Using headphones or ear buds can help some children to concentrate better. We know one who could not sit still long enough for the simplest answers, yet he was thrilled when he was given ear buds to try with his new CD and the difference was like night and day. The catechism was right in his ear and made it easy for him to pay attention. He and his parents were thrilled! The "pause" function can be used by older children to simulate a quiz with self correcting answer. May God grant us each the grace of a holy life and final perseverance.
