Audio Catechism Story!
Our Audio Catechism story began in 1995 when our first child was to receive her First Communion. We were told that the date would be in August. Then our pastor was relocated. The next pastor said First Holy Communion would take place in September or October.
Then November, December.... Yes, you might have guessed it, the date was finally Mother's Day! We didn't guess it, yet at about November we told our daughter that once she could pronounce and remember her catechism answers well enough, we would put the questions and answers on a cassette that she could keep and review at will even while she played with her sister and brother, colored or worked on crafts. Voila! Audio catechism. Now we are free to drill the catechism while we are driving back and forth to Mass, school, or doing other errands. Catechism Copybook Story!
Later, once we realized the benefits of Catholic copywork, we made up Catechism copybooks for our youngest children so that they would have the penmanship practice they needed and some filler/busywork to keep them busy with constructive material when the rest of us were otherwise busy. What better Catholic copywork than the Baltimore Catechism for children?
Being able to continue writing, even though he could not read, kept one of our sons "write" ready for the moment when reading "clicked". He he soon moved up to near grade level because we had kept up his explicit instruction in phonics and writing by using dictation, yet this extra exercise has given him something "easy" to do so he feels that sense of accomplishment and keeps on working.
