Blue Hour

by Sue
(Gloucestershire, England)

My favourite Christmas tradition is one that my mother introduced us to when we were little. She called it Blue Hour.

We'd come home from school or work, just as dusk was falling. She would make tea / coffee, put out some biscuits or cakes, turn the lights out, light the candles on the table and put on some music. I remember Bach's Christmas Oratorio, carols or soothing piano music.

All we did was listen to the music and watch the candles burn...

Quiet contemplation is something many of us seem to miss out on in these hectic times. And occasionally it's nice to remember that life CAN be peaceful. Even if it's just during Advent.

Kind regards,
Sue from Essentially England

English Christmas Traditions
by: Mary

What a dear Christmas traditon! You must have dear and warm memories of Christmas at home. We love the sentiments that the Christmas Carols
portray and what a good idea to spend an hour meditating during the season of Advent! My personal favorite is O Holy Night. I can hardly listen to that song without tears of gratitude for what Jesus did for us!

Do you know about Boxing Day? We hear about it being one of the Brittish Christmas tradions in England, and wondered if you or someone else might know how to describe it and its history.
