A Catholic Missal Uses The Douay-Rheims Bible Translation
A Catholic Missal uses the Douay-Rheims Bible
whether it is a Sunday Missal or 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal. It has scripture readings for every day of the year. On many days there are several choices for the daily readings (Proper of the Season or Proper of the Saints) depending whether the day is in a season like Lent
, the date falls on Sunday, or whether two saints share the same feast day. It is the original "daily thoughts for meditation book"!
A Catholic Missal also has a good translation of the Ordinary of the Mass. A clue to this is the translation used for the Judica me, the first prayer.
The Catholic Mass concurs with all the basic Catholic beliefs. Lex orandi, Lex credendi. We believe what we pray.

A 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal
has the readings for every day of the year. A child's Missal
has a child's version of the Ordinary of the Mass. My Mass Book as published by Neumann Press even has the exact prayers of much of the Ordinary with excellent pictures that show where the priest is relative to the altar.
All three usually explain some aspects of the Mass and give the usual prayers for Eucharistic devotion and even the prayers of the other Sacraments like the Baptism Ceremony.
These are things we wish we had known years ago so as not to have purchased a missal that we later would not use. In this way we have purchased many books that we will not use simply because they compromise the basic Catholic beliefs
(see St. Anne's Audio Catechism and Copybook for both First Communion and Confirmation)
in their various inclusions, omissions or paraphrases. (See Blessed Pope Pius IX's encyclical Pascendi #60 that warns to beware with an Imprimatur.) At least we now have proof in these books for our children that even otherwise "good Catholic books
" suffer the inroads of error as with some catechisms and text books - even from the 1930s and 1940s! God forbid that any are published this way with purpose and forethought.
Finding A Good Catholic Missal!
Finding the best Catholic Missal can be a real trick since most publishers don't sell a variety of missals. They find a version they like, usually the best that they could find, and they print a reproduction of it.
As long as they printed the prayers and readings intact there are two very easy litmus test questions:
-Does it use the Douay-Rheims Bible for the scripture readings?
-How does it "translate" the 'Judica me'?
-Also, how does it word prayers such as "Adoro te devote" by St. Thomas Aquinas on the feast of Corpus Christi?
-Another big "red flag waving" is the artwork!
See these ideas explained below.
Douay-Rheims Bible Readings
There are many places where the paraphrased versions contradict or diminish the meaning of the readings from the Douay-Rheims Bible
as used in a Roman Catholic Missal.
During Advent St. John the Baptist insists that we do penance. Protestant and other versions use "Repent ye!"
The Catechism of the Bible
says that the Latin variation of a word is retained in the Bible, for example: multitude instead of crowd (a dimunition in meaning as well), testament instead of covenant (one need not die for a covenant), adore instead of worship (one can hear the Latin for testament and adore while the Latin is read from the altar), etc. This applies to many words that are changed in other versions.
The Douay-Rheims Bible
uses the word "man" in the classic manner meaning the universal "mankind" (which includes all those with an intellect or will: young or old, male or female, propertied or not, etc.). Versions that are paraphrased use the unisex words instead.
Judica Me
Does the Judica Me say "Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause..." or does it command "Do me justice..." (or worse)?
If one can prove there is no change in meaning in this instance, one cannot prove that the demeanor of it is more humble. The better translation retains the Catholic disposition in a petition.
Prayer Versions
The Prayer before a Crucifix is a good place to start. The Fr. Lassance Catholic Missal uses contrition instead of repentance as found in some missals.
The Adoro Te Devote by St. Thomas Aquinas as found on the Feast of Corpus Christi is another good place to look.
If the words betray the sense of the Faith, beware the book. This is one reason it is so important to learn the best Catholic answers
to the Baltimore Catechism
. We need to have a way to tell the good books from the bad. A real Catholic catechism teaches the Apostle's Creed, the Sacraments, the Catholic Ten Commandments
and the Virtues. If the sense of a text concurs with these then there is some certitude that the book teaches the Faith.
Artwork!
Nearly anytime a book, especially a Catholic Missal, is published by a well financed institutional Catholic publisher uses poor artwork there is a need to be on guard. Hagard or ugly faces (on even such as Jesus or Our Lady), magic-marker art, or indecent and unusual presentations that distort the Catholic message of the picture usually indicate a lack of discernment on the publisher's part or a deliberate mistatement of the Faith on someone's part. We do not mean those publishers who are struggling to revive the Faith who in good will did not know that there is a wealth of Catholic art now in the public domain!
See our growing list of red-flag sitings
to see how "minor" revisions and omissions are not required to be marked or to have the copywrite and publication information changed! In this day of easy electronic manipulation one needs to be able to compare against the standard of Catholic principles: truth, beauty, modesty (not only in pictures, either).
Conclusion
A Catholic Missal uses the Douay-Rhiems Bible and a version of the Ordinary of the Mass that retains the sense of humble sacrifice to the Blessed Trinity (not some Architect of the Universe). The artwork is easy to scan for a general impression. These are the most important things to consider. Truth first!
Translations of related prayers in a good Catholic Missal have more room for legitimate variety, especially if the translator comes from a different country, for example: England, France, Germany or Spain.
It is so important to keep these principles in mind when finding a Catholic Missal. The basic Catholic beliefs
are found in the Baltimore Catechism
and the easiest way to learn them are in such books as the Baltimore Catechism No.1
(for the reception of the Holy Eucharist), Baltimore Catechism No. 2
(for the reception of Catholic Confirmation), and the Catechism Explained
(which is an adult Baltimore Catechism).
