Catholic Spirituality
Of Roman Catholic Saints

The first stept to Catholic spirituality is to live the Catholic catechism. There are good books that send you in the right direction. Which ones? Depending on your state in life, you can ascend the Way of Perfection with spiritual reading from such greats as Saint Benedict, Saint Augustine, Saint Teresa and other Roman Catholic saints. Let the saints guide you.

The first step to being holy is to practice the Catholic Faith which presumes that you know the Catholic Ten Commandments and the Apostles' Creed and are familiar with what they ask. If you don't know, see our recommendations throughout the length of this page and peruse our site for more answers to your search. This web page is a long web page with links to more Catholic information for your convenience.

Of course, the Ten Commandments already set a rule of life. Catholic spirituality gives the Catholic life different flavors. Benedictine? Study Saint Benedict's Rule. Augustine? Study Saint Augustine's Confessions and his City Of God. Dominican? Study Saint Dominic. Franciscan? Study Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare and her Poor Clares nuns. Carmelite? Study Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross and their writings. Ignatian? Study Saint Ignatius of Loyola and go on an Ignatian Retreat! Not sure? Pray the daily Rosary and schedule an Ignatian Retreat. Want to learn how to pray the Rosary?

Begin your Catholic spirituality with the Rosary and spiritual reading from books written by Catholic saints (what better guarantee!). There are spiritual warfare prayers after the thinking of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. There are also many inspirational Catholic books, but our favorites are those that tell the stories of the Catholic saints. I'd avoid the books that emphasize how bad saints were before conversion that don't also explain what was bad and how the conversion came, or that end abruptly with little edifying material, especially for children. The whole idea is to find the model of sanctitiy to imitate, not to become immersed in the bad details.

Do you know the life of your patron saints?

Be certain to seek the counsel of a good Catholic priest if you are following a vocation or a serious path in the Way of Perfection. The following books are mentioned as guidelines, yet you must also be careful of the "translation" you buy. We do not recommend all versions of these books. There is frequently a mix of disbelief or oriental pagan elements introduced by some authors, translators and publishers. When in doubt, check it out or leave it out!

More Catholic Spirituality?

Ask your pastor or confessor. There are frequently Benedictine, Dominican, Franciscan, and Carmelite Third Orders if you do not have a vocation to the priesthood or the religious life. You can also look for good versions of books by any of the Catholic saints especially their writings on the lives of the saints; these make excellent food for meditation. We like Fr. Lassance, Fr. Von Cochem, Dom Garigou-Lagrange and more as well. Check Amazon for old Catholic books and even Catholic eBooks.

Learn The Truths Of The Roman Catholic Church Easily

The purpose of this site is to point you to concise and comprehensive books about the Roman Catholic Church that teach what the Catholic Religion has always taught and to be a tiny part of the answer to your search for Catholic spirituality. If you thought that Catholic spirituality means learning to be a Catholic, you were right. It is the beginning of the Way of Perfection. Being a good Catholic is prerequisite to being holy. Are you receiving the sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist regularly? Are you confirmed? Are you praying and practicing the virtues? If not, the rest of this page is designed to give you some good ideas.

Looking to learn the basic Catholic beliefs for your First Communion or Catholic Confirmation? Be encouraged that they are easy to learn! First, learn the Catholic Ten Commandments, then learn the Apostle's Creed; or vice versa. The rest follows as you ask more, or learn more, about each of the Ten Commandments and the Twelve Articles of the Apostles' Creed.

The Roman Catholic Church is the Church of Jesus Christ. After the Fall, God prepared His creation for the Incarnation of His Divine Son and its Redemption by Jesus' Passion and Death. He rose from the dead to prove that all of the scriptures spoke of Him; that He is the Son of God, as foretold by Isaias and Daniel. Jesus gave the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and Peter went to Rome. The Seat of Peter is in Rome to this day, it was his diocese. This is why our Church is called Roman. This is just a simple start; yet there is so much more that can be learned about Catholic spirituality.

Every Roman Catholic catechism teaches the basic truths of the Roman Catholic Religion and is the basis of Catholic spirituality. Children? First Communion Catechism. Youth and adolescents? Confirmation Catechism and This Is The Faith. Adults? Saint Anne's Helper and other Catholic audio books, lives of the saints, and the Catechism of the Council of Trent (a very easy read). More? The Catechism Explained.

Why do we have to specify Roman in our web searches? We need to be specific since there are many sites that offer a watered down version of the Faith as if they do not even want to use the term Catholic, much less Roman Catholic. There are also Anglicans who use the term Catholic and one must differentiate so as not to find a Protestant site or recommendation.

The Catholic Ten Commandments
The Catholic Ten Commandments both tell us what to do and what not to do; the "tells" and the "forbids" of the First Communion catechism. Here you've just learned what to do and what not to do, the very beginning of the Catholic spiritual life. Adults? Use The Catechism Explained for more detailed study. There really is a difference between the Protestant and the The Catholic Ten Commandments.

The basic Catholic beliefs are covered by the Ten Commandments and the truths that Jesus taught in order for us to be able to keep those Ten Commandments and have eternal life. The Sacraments, which give us the grace necessary to keep the Faith; the Apostles' Creed, which teaches the Faith; the Catholic Rosary, which, after the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and its daily Bible readings, is the best way to keep the Faith; these and the other Catholic prayers, are covered by the first three Commandments. Marriage, education, family? Fourth Commandment. Abortion, euthanasia, war? Fifth Commandment. Forms of immorality? Sixth and Ninth Commandments. Theft of any sort, Communism, Socialism and other distributive -isms? Seventh and Tenth Commandments. Lies, freedom of speech? Eighth Commandment. Knowing the principles makes daily decisions easier. Have you learned the Ten Commandments? See links to other subjects below.

The Apostles' Creed
The Apostles' Creed tells us what we believe in the Catholic Religion. When asked "What do you believe?", a Catholic answers: "I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth...." Guess what? You've just learned about Creation, Heaven and Earth. The rest of the Apostles' Creed teaches about why Jesus came and what His promise is.

The Catholic Sacraments
The Catholic Sacraments are the means by which we receive grace. The sacrament of Baptism is the first sacrament and it washes away Original Sin, makes us children of God and heirs of Heaven. The sacrament of the Holy Eucharist feeds us with the grace necessary to keep the Faith. The sacrament of Penance washes away our sins in the Blood of Jesus Christ. The sacrament of Confirmation makes us strong in the practice of the Faith. The sacrament of Matrimony gives each of us the grace necessary to persevere as a good spouse. For those who choose the better part, as St. Paul says, the sacrament of Holy Orders and the religious vows grant us those servants who will teach the Catholic Religion and will rule Jesus' Church. The sacrament of Extreme Unction grants us the strength necessary to die well, the most helpful grace for final perseverance in Catholic spirituality! Count on the Catholic sacraments. All through life we have the help of the sacraments. Their grace is effective! Because of them you have the right before God to the help they confer. Now you have the help necessary to persevere as a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Again, there are Protestant ceremonies that the Protestants do call sacraments so be certain of your sources.

The Catholic Rosary
The Catholic Rosary is our safest haven. Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces, promises that those who have a devotion to her Rosary will go to Heaven. Our own devotion while praying the daily Rosary is the main limitation. After the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass - the Rosary is the most indulgenced help and it is one of the most easily recognizable symbols of Catholic spirituality. In other words, we don't know of many people of other religions who say the Rosary :-)

Did you know that there is one thing necessary? It is that you must save your soul. Pray for the grace of final perseverance and then study how to obtain it. Learn the truth of the Roman Catholic Church, ask God for the Faith, and seek Baptism as Jesus Christ directed. Once you receive the sacraments you will have the graces necessary to live a true Catholic spirituality! Are you praying?

The Catholic Prayers
The prayers of the Roman Catholic Church and our own personal prayers communicate our thoughts to God and teach us as well! "Lex orandi, lex credendi." The law of prayer guides the law of faith and preserves it. The more devoutly you pray the easier it is to get to Heaven. More help in the Catholic Religion! Use it all day long.

The Catholic Bible
The Catholic Bible tells us Creation's history through the first century. It starts: "In the beginning God created Heaven and Earth..." (Genesis 1:1) There are many rewrites, but the Catholic Bible has the whole Word of God in the most beautiful language. See it at this next link to get an idea of the beauty of your favorite Bible passages and to use as a Catholic Bible Online to use for research and cut/paste options. There are so many different books that call themselves Bibles today, that we wonder if anyone uses the term "paraphrase" anymore.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches what Jesus Christ taught ever since He founded her; and she has taught it around the world without substantial change for 2000 years in spite of troubles. What was true then is true now and will always be true. What a consolation in confidence and certitude in the spiritual life! The Roman Catholic Church has preserved the history of the Church of Jesus Christ and its writings. The Pope even chose the holiest and most highly educated man of his time, St. Jerome, to organize the Holy Scriptures into what we now call the Catholic Bible and it survives to this day. Even Martin Luther admitted that we would not have the Bible if it were not for the Roman Catholic Church.

The Catholic Saints
The Catholic saints walked the walk and talked the talk! They are the models of Catholic spirituality to follow; from heroic child martyrs as in The Children Of The Kingdom to greats like Saint Patrick.

The prayers, Bible stories, stories of the saints, the corporal works of mercy, and the spiritual works of mercy of the Roman Catholic Church make final perseverance easy! Fill your day with the service of God and He will fill you with Eternal Happiness!

Aiming to live what a Catholic spirituality is what makes our own family happy, and we want the same for you and yours! Remember that the Faith is simple enough for the newborn to be Baptized and go to Heaven; and it is also more complex and full than even the great St. Thomas Aquinas could fathom! Welcome to St. Anne's Helper and our favorite introductions to the Roman Catholic Church and remember with grateful tears that Jesus Christ died to save your soul and would have come for you even if you were the only one who had fallen. He saw you in His Agony and from His Most Holy Cross! He deserves our love and He deserves to make the rules for the creatures He created for the glory of Heaven. Catholic spirituality begins by following Him to Heaven the Way that He calls us all by following the Apostles' Creed and doing the Ten Commandments and reading Catholic spirituality books that stand the test of time!

Remember Dear Christian:

You have but one soul to save,

One God to love and to serve,

One eternity to expect,

Death will come soon,

Judgment will follow,

And then,

Heaven or Hell forever!
