Christmas traditions here in Virginia

by Delmus

Elks Home

Tis the season,

One of our most exciting Christmas traditions in the heart of Virginia is to take the family out to view Christmas Lights. We end up driving all around the city for a few hours with hot cocoa, seasonal music, and good times.

Having a large family, we have lots to talk about, especially Christmas's past. The pranks, the special gifts, the snows.

As the evening winds down, sometimes we'll take an extra trip to a very special place about 30 miles from our home. It's in another small town Bedford, where the National Elks Retirement Home is located.

They spruce up the place with all kinds of lights, puppets, and displays. People come from all over Virginia just to see these lights. I mean Bus Tours!

Its always heart warming to see the small children with their mouths a gap looking at the spectacle with wonder.

If you're ever near it, come see it!

Christmas Traditions in Virginia
by: Mary

Thanks, Delmus. This is one of our favorite Christmas Traditions, too, although we aren't so well prepared with such treasures as hot chocolate when we go! We used to live in Maryland and Virginia and can appreciate the beauty of which you speak. We remember many grand and spacious homes that were kind enough to decorate their front yards in tasteful and brilliant ways, but few were so beautiful as the one you show!

I remember it being a special time to pile into the station wagon to "Go see the Christmas lights". We'd frequently have to wipe the windows clear because there were 10 of us in the car! Well, we have our own eight children and there are 10 of us in the van when we go and we sometimes have to clear the back windows ourselves!

That is a beautiful Poinsettia, too. Thanks for the beautiful pictures. If I had not visited your website, I would not have realized that the Poinsettia was a painting!

Thanks for reminding us of these warm Christmas memories and extra thanks for the pictures!
