The Haydock Bible Is The
Douay-Rheims Bible With Commentary
The Haydock Douay-Rheims Bible was compiled by Fr. George Haydock, a distant relative and namesake of the priest, Blessed George Haydock. We were delighted to find that there were two Fr. George Haydocks and that one has been beatified by the Catholic Church!
The second Fr. Haydock's brother, Thomas, ran the publishing house in England that published the Haydock Douay-Rheims Bible. All three men had lived under persecution during their respective times.
Blessed George Haydock had been a seminarian-priest martyr. His namesake, Fr. George, and Mr. Thomas Haydock lived in the precarious times before the Catholic penal laws were lifted in England in the 1800s. These facts of persecution add strong marks of credibility to this "version" of the Catholic Bible to its many and celebrated aprobations. These men were willing to suffer persecution and to die for the Faith that it teaches.

The feature that is special to the Haydock version is its Commentary of the Saints which can be very useful when studying the Bible or using it to supplement a catechism, Catholic religious education course, or Catholic homeschool.

It is a dream to be able to copy and paste from a Catholic Bible into your own work - it can save a lot of re-typing and the attendant errors of omission.
The Douay-Rheims Bible is the Roman Catholic Bible that has the best "translation" from the Latin Vulgate of St. Jerome. It, also, survived the proof of persecution.
The original Latin meaning was simply "carried" (trans-) from the original Vulgate. Many other versions, including the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine "version", are paraphrases. Remember that the Douay-Rheims was translated at a time when every word mattered sometimes to the point of martyrdom. The Anglicans in England were ready to kill Catholics over such matters as true Catholic education as they did St. Margaret Clitherow.

The Catechism Of The Bible (By Rev. John O'Brien, M.A. New York 1924) is a Catechism Catholics who choose the Douay will appreciate dearly. It teaches many of the reasons that the Douay-Rheims Bible is the Roman Catholic Bilbe.
Commentary By Catholic Saints
A great feature of the Haydock version is its running commentary of Catholic saints and Fathers of the Church on the same page as the text which appear as footnotes. Both the Old Testament and New Testament have this commentary. This helps the reader understand the Catholic understanding of the Scriptures, which is sometimes hard to "wrest"!

The reprints of the Haydock Douay-Rheims Bible that we have seen also have a beautiful pictorial Catholic Dictionary that is an unusually interesting feature that adds a great value to the book. There are also other appendices such as phenomenal pictures of Bible stories and a Bible history.
