Easter Dates

Douay-Rheims Bible PaperboundThe Bible tells the Easter story!Throughout the history of Easter the dates have changed since the date for Easter Sunday depends on the cycle of the moon which corresponds to the original Passover when God delivered the Isrealites from their Egyptian captivity. "The date of Ash Wednesday varies every year between February 4 and March 10." (Practical Meditations p. 80) After July 1 the dates for the Liturgical year are more regular with few variable dates outside the beginning of the Roman Catholic Advent season."

"When is Easter Sunday?" comes up every year because of this variable. See our home page and blog for this year's Lent and Easter dates. The dates for Ash Wednesday and Lent depend on the Easter dates each year as well since they are calculated back from Easter Sunday.

2010 Mary and the Saints CalendarWhen is Easter Sunday?"The three Sundays preceeding Ash Wednesday are called Septuagesima (1962 Missal), Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, which mean, respectively, the seventieth, sixtieth, and fiftieth day, that is , before Easter. they are mere names to correspond with the name of Lent (Quadragesima in Latin; fortieth); obviously they do not actually correspond with the period they indicate." (New Marian Missal p. 132) Septuagesima is the beginning of the penitential season according to the old calendar.

Mystical City of GodThe Mystical City of God."Septuagesima is followed by Sexagesima and Quinquagesima; this last is the Sunday next before Ash Wednesday on which Lent begins. Lent has six Sundays: the two last of these are respectively, Passion Sunday and Palm Sunday. The week beginning with Palm Sunday, that in which Our Lord was betrayed and crucified, is known as Holy Week. Easter Sunday, the feast of the Resurrection of Our Lor, is the Sunday next following the full moon first occurring after the twentieth day of the month of March. The earliest possible date for Easter is March 22, and the latest April 25." (Fr. Lassance Missal p. 1622)

Easter Sunday Mass

Buy a 1962 Missal as per Sumorum Pontificum! The most important event on Easter Sunday is the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! The Mass is the reason we don Easter dresses, make special Easter Recipes, and send Easter flowers to the loved ones that we cannot visit.

The Easter Vigil has its own Mass on Holy Saturday. It has a great ceremony all its own which begins with the blessing of the fire that will light the Easter candle (Paschal candle) which will not be extinguished until immediately after the Gospel on Ascension Thursday.

The Easter Sunday Mass of the day is surprisingly short compared to the long Masses during the season of Lent. The readings are short and to the point. Rejoice! Alleluia!

The Gospel tells of Mary Magdalen, Mary the mother of James, and Salome coming to finish the burial of Jesus. (Mark 16, 1-7) "The first day of the week, came Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre. And behold there was a great earthquake. For an angel of the Lord descended from Heaven and coming rolled back the stone. And the angel answering, said to the women: Fear not you; for I know you seek, Jesus Who was crucified. He is not here. For he Is risen. (Matthew 28, 2...6) Fr. Lassance Missal p. 538
