Extra Penances
Giving Up Something For Lent!

Extra penances: saying Rosary on wooden floor (instead of the carpet), no social gatherings, no desserts, no alcohol. Family reading: "A Doctor at Calvary" and in general, we skip secular readings.

A friend some years back introduced us to "A Doctor at Calvary" by Pierre Barbet, M.D. Although certain sections of the book are a bit technical, it has proved an excellent way to really try to "feel" Our Lord's pain in His Passion, even for the little ones.

Giving Up Something For Lent
by: Mary

Thank you for this most edifying post! Giving up this much for the love of Jesus is bound to send your dear family many graces at Easter and throughout the year!

We find it plenty to do the regular Lent fasting and abstinence, trying to have way less food during the week and no sweets - except on Sunday.

Dr. Barbet's book is my favorite book to read during the Lent season! Telling what happened on Calvary from his perspective has caused our children to have a better grasp on the pain that Jesus suffered for each of us! Nothing makes us rejoice on Easter like a good Lent!

We are reading saints books through the school year right now for the children's spiritual reading.

Thanks for the great submission! Be sure to come back, we want to hear the fruits of this excellent Lent tradition!
