The Meaning Of Palm Sunday
We want to know the meaning of Palm Sunday as we begin to think of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The meaning of Palm Sunday depends upon the history of Palm Sunday as told in the four Gospels. Those who ask to understand it usually want to know what happened on Palm Sunday. It comes at the end of the Catholic Lent season at the beginning of Holy Week, and its liturgy is one of the most beautiful prayers for Lent. The reading of the Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ from one of the four Gospels is a long and beautiful ceremony, especially at the solemn high Mass. Different priests, deacons, and choir members sing the Gospel account of the unjust judgements of Jesus, His way of the Cross, and His Death on Calvary which is marked by a moment of silence. The best place to read about it is from the Bible itself. The account is given in each of the four Gospels which are the first four books of the New Testament.
What is lent? The Catholic Lent season begins on Ash Wednesday.
What is Palm Sunday? It is the Sunday before Easter Sunday. In the liturgy of Palm Sunday Jesus enters Jerusalem as foretold in the Old Testament and its account is given in the four Gospels. The history of Palm Sunday is the account of Jesus openly entering Jerusalem. The people rushed to meet Him because of His miracles and fame. He entered riding a donkey, and the people spread palm branches before Him as a sign of welcome and honor. The meaning of Palm Sunday warns that anyone can turn on Jesus at any moment in spite of our devotion to Him. They, like us, were quick to profess their admiration and love for Him, yet little did they suspect that most of them would be crying for His death on Good Friday, that very week! What is the history of Good Friday?
Palm Sunday Sermon?
One Mass of the day is preceded by a blessing of the palms, passing the palms to the members of the congregation, and a procession. This can be a long ceremony if there are many parishioners present.
The Epistle and the Gospel give the prophecy and the account of the Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ. There may be a short explanation of the meaning of Palm Sunday before the blessing or before the Mass, but there is usually no Palm Sunday sermon because the readings speak for themselves and the liturgy is already quite long.
Palm Sunday sermons are rare for these reasons, especially in a large parish where there are many Masses on the day.
When is Easter?
Easter Sunday is the Sunday after Good Friday and marks the historical date that Jesus Christ rose from the dead by His own omnipotent power. This marks the day that He proved that He truly is the Son of God. The history of Easter would not be complete if we did not study the history of Palm Sunday and Good Friday. The better we prepare during Lent with prayers, sacrifices and alms to do penance for our many sins and to gain supernatural graces. Easter dates change each year since the date depends on the stages of the moon. When is Easter? The day after Lent!
The full meaning of Palm Sunday is better understood when one has read the Gospel account, practiced penance during Lent, and followed the Good Friday liturgy in the full history of Easter. The readings of the day from the Old Testament and the New Testament from Ash Wednesday and Lent tell the prophecies and their fulfillment on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
