Our Family's Advent Calendar

by Judy
(PA, USA)

Our most favorite Advent tradition is the making of our own calendar for the season.

About a week before the first Sunday of Advent, we gather 'round the table with lots of Christmas cards of old, glue, markers, art paper, ribbon, and other supplies.

Everyone helps to cut out 26 pictures and 26 colorful rectangles from construction paper.
Each image is then glued to individual papers, thus creating "pages" for our calendar. The date is listed on each page and underneath the picture, we add a family activity which we will then carry out when that time comes. Some ideas are: "Sing a hymn and enjoy hot cocoa together", "Take a treat to an elderly neighbor today" "Donate clothing to the poor" "Read the Scripture passage of the Annunciation and make ornaments for the tree".

We punch a hole at the top of each page and thread all the pages together with a pretty ribbon.

We hang our Advent Calendar in a prominent spot in our home and the children delight in watching the pages get turned each day as we carry out our activities to help prepare and focus our hearts for the coming of the celebration of Christ's birth!

Roman Catholic Advent Season Ideas
by: Mary

Our children look forward to making one of these Advent calendars this week! Yours sounds so inviting! We would be a little late, yet the one we are getting ready to use tomorrow has lost 3 of its tiny little doors and could use some extra glitter again. A little time spent on Advent crafts now will bring years of good memories later!
