When we were looking for the definitive Roman Catholic catechism
we found that the Catechism of the Council of Trent Tan Books) is the most concise adult Catholic catechism. It uses only Catholic answers
and is the standard for most of the question and answer catechisms.
The Catechism Explained
(Tan Books) is an excellent adult Baltimore Catechism with more of a question and answer format.
The Catechism in Pictures (India) is even more precise! The pictures alone teach the Faith to both adults
and children. It is out of print at this time but the publisher in India was expected to be available in May 2009, yet now the publisher estimates that it will be late August and is grateful for our patience.
The most concise Catholic catechism for First Communion
and Confirmation Preparation is St. Anne's Helper Audio Catechism (CDs or Downloads) and Catechism Copybooks.
We have also learned that the Baltimore Catechism that is used as a catechism for children has very many versions some with very good
precisions. It was meant to teach the Roman Catholic Catechism yet different editions differ on some points.
Catechism of the Council of Trent For Adults
The version of The Catechism of the Council Of Trent that Tan sells includes a beautiful print of the Chair of Peter. Since the Chair represents the idea of Peter being the supreme Bishop and since "revisions" of later dates omit this picture we recommend the Tan Catechism of the Council Of Trent publication. Tan has made a serious effort over the years to republish the best versions of good Catholic books for us who do not have access to originals and we are grateful for this. Tan has made it possible for many people to gain a sense of the Faith, (sensus Fidei) from such as this definitive Roman Catholic catechism. We were also edified by the explanations in The Catechism of the Council Of Trent that used Douay-Rheims Bible quotes, expansions of ideas, and stories of the saints WITHOUT prevarication or dissipation of the basic Catholic beliefs. Please include ad link.The Catechism of the Council of Trent has an excellent introduction that describes its history. It describes why the it is the Roman Catholic Catechism and why it took so long for the vernacular versions to be put into publication. It also teaches the discipline, time and effort necessary to publish good Catholic books. We were thrilled to find that SAINT Charles Borromeo was in charge of its last stages. It offers further certitude that the work is a good one. The Catechism In Pictures is another definitive Roman Catholic catechism that was published in the late 1800s in France and its stated purpose was to teach the Catechism of the Council of Trent by using pictures to aid the memory. These pictures are beautiful paintings not little cartoon images. There is no mistaking Hell and sin here!
Catechism For Children
Deharbe's Catechisms were excellent and were published before the Baltimore Catechisms. They aimed to be comprehensive and "as plain as possible" (p. 3). The Baltimore Catechism is meant to be the question and answer catechism for the United States of America (for any English speaking catechumen) and became the popular version used here in the USA. It has easy to memorize answers to the basic Catholic beliefs as did Deharbe's. There are some points to beware of in the Baltimore, even in the old versions. See our list of some of these points. Please include ad link.The use of the word "world" in the 1885 version and the use of plural answers to the confession questions deserve explanation, especially in the instruction of young or new catechumens. Most of the versions concur in the answers to the questions. In the 1930s the term for God as "the Creator of Heaven and earth and all things" was being removed and the term Supreme Being was being introduced. At this time, also, expanded versions of the Baltimore Catechism for children were produced by the Confraternity for Christian Doctrine, CCD. Many of these used the answers that do not defend against evolution and that use plural confession answers. A feature of some of the expanded versions was the addition of quotes from the Confraternity version of the Bible instead of the Douay-Rheims Bible; true and false questions, multiple choice questions, and fill in the blank questions (remember that a catechism is a Q & A already by definition!); expansions that twist the use of Scripture quotes, even about the Resurrection and the Ascension. Usually a priest or sister can make these books work well, yet what about those of us who were not taught the truths that "fill in the blanks"? Another addition was the use of artwork that depicts the saints in a haggard manner, indecent necklines or hemlines, and magic-marker art instead of the good artwork already available to the very same publishers. These are Red-Flags-Waving. The ones that pertain to First Communion are listed here. The book we recommend for preparing for First Communion and Catholic Confession is Jesus Comes (Neumann Press) . It has the best set of answers that we have found and beautiful, modest pictures!
Audio Catechism and Catechism Copybooks!
St. Anne's HelperAudio Catechism uses the best Catholic answers for First Communion and for Confirmation preparation. Each is also an excellent summary for adults studying the Faith. The St. Anne's Audio Catechism is a great help to both adults on the go and to children
